Birth House of Sofija Kymantaitė-Čiurlionienė

While conducting research on the Joniškis’ region cultural heritage, the historian living in Joniškis, Dr Ernestas Vasiliauskas, concluded that the vicarage belonging to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church in Joniškis is the same house as where Sofija Kymantaitė-Čiurlionienė (1886-1958) was born in 1886. Her uncle, the then vicar of Joniškis Church Vincentas Jarulaitis (1859-1939) and the Kymantai family of his sister Elžbieta (1858-1937) and Leonas (1842-1919) lived in this house. Thanks to the parish, the abandoned house has been restored and included in the Cultural Heritage Register (No. 44852), while thanks to the efforts of the Joniškis Branch of the Semigallia Cultural Society, a public exposition of awning photographs has been set up in the windows of the house, which is intended to emphasise the memory and birthplace of the Lithuanian writer, social activist, literary and art critic, playwright, poet, and translator, Sofija Kymantaitė-Čiurlionienė, who was born in Joniškis. Next to the house, the outdoor book house Sofijos knygynėlis is set up for public use. The house’s windowsills have flowerbeds that bloom with flowers in the summer. As there are directions to this house in the city, it is easy to find.
