Kalnelis (Sidabrė) Mound

Kalnelis (Sidabrė) Mound is a national archaeological, historical and mythological property (No. 23854). In the 13th century a defensive castle with a settlement stood on the Mound, also known as the last Semigallian tribe fortress in fights with the Livonian Order. In 1288 the castle was mentioned in historic sources for the first time as the fortress that the Livonian Order failed to conquer. In 1290 Semigallians had to leave Sidarbė due to starvation and attacks. The conquering of Semigallia came to an end after the crusaders burnt Sidabrė. In later historical sources Sidabrė is no longer mentioned; only Sidarbė Hill appears in 1426 when deciding the border between Livonia and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.
Joniškis traces its origins to the first mentions of Sidabrė Castle in historical sources. The legend of the resistance of the defenders of Sidabrė Castle inspired the inhabitants of Joniškis for the events of the Lithuanian Awakening. This is evidenced by the monument erected in Kalnelis to commemorate the defenders of Sidabrė Castle and the tribe of Semigallians who fought for their freedom.
in the 16th to 17th century a chapel and cemetery were built on the Kalnelis (Sidabrė) Mound.
